  • Summer trend alert: Crochet!

Everything old is new again, and that's certainly the case for crochet. A huge trend not only in fashion, but interiors, crochet is making a big comeback, so get amongst it. But it's not all doilies and granny squares. Think subtle touches of crochet around the bottom of your shorts, or a crochet bib on a summery mini-dress. For the flowerchild within, don't hesitate this season to jump in to a crochet bikini or dress. There are no rules to the trend this time round. That means that with a little or a lot, you can't go wrong. Also, in times gone by, crochet has been associated with neutral colours, usually white, beige or even calico tones. Not anymore. This trend can be worn in evey colour under the sun. And the less neutral, the less you'll look like you're wearing your nan's table cloth.

For inspiration, think Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella, Beyonce on Good Morning America or Kourtney K just doing her thing.

    celebs

Go granny or hippy, or even mod, a la Miley Cyrus at the 2013 Billboards.

    options

Add a little crochet to your life with Mombasa Rose's huge range.

For beach days, head straight for our Paloma Bikini Tops. Pair them with basic bottoms or a complementary print.

    bikinis

If you're just after a touch of the trend, try the Summer Romance dress with its crocheted midriff, our Shabby Chic shorts or a colourful, off the shoulder Canape top with crocheted trims.

    touches

If you're a sucker for a print, the Lekker Mazie dress is the item for you. This gorgeous flowy mini-dresses come in a range of prints and each has a gorgeous crocheted bib.

If you're not sure at all about the trend and just think a little bit of the weave could be a good start, take some time out with our friendship bracelet kit.

However you work it in, crochet is set to be an essential summer trend in 2014/15, so don't hesitate! Head in store or jump online to shop the trend now.

Bali - Fav destination so far!

In terms of style icons, who do you think you most try to emulate within your own style?

I honestly couldn't pick anyone, I couldn't even consider myself to have a style, I see something I like and I make it work with me, one day I might look 'hippy' then another 'city chic'.

Favourite trend for the Spring season and what do you think we’ll be seeing lots of this Summer?

  • TREND ALERT: Capes

Stop what you're doing and listen up. You need a cape in your life. Now. You need the luxurious, lovely, flowy, fashion-forward but deliciously retro, comfortable but chic item of the season. Your cape will take you from winter all the way through spring into summer – it can easily be used as a beach cover-up!

    trend_resized

This dreamy style may be everywhere right now, but it's not hard to make this fashion trend your own. Wear it short, long, mid-length, with sleeves, without, sleeves rolled up, fringed, printed, plain or any combination of those. Our favourites are sheer printed pieces like these:

    images_resized

Shop Mombasa Rose Online for our Hummingbird Cape, Red Rose Bohemian Like You Cape, Sweetly Cape, Bohemian Like You Purple Cape and Mixed Print Cape.

Wear your new cape with denim, a simple dress, or even bathers. The trick is to layer your kimono over figure hugging clothes so you don't end up with too much unflattering bulk. We recommend semi-basics like our Tombi shorts, Blessings tops, Rib Halter tops and Lena Medici palazzo pants for double luxe.

    add-ons_resized

The beauty of the outfit? Your cape is your feature and it's oh so easy to show off!

Don't forget though, that the luxurious look of the cape can be amplified by adorning yourself with accessories. More is more when you're adding bracelets, rings and earrings, but the same does not apply for necklaces as these can add too much interest on your neckline.

Style your cape with an oversize clutch tucked under your arm. Alternatively, buckle or tie a belt around your natural waist. Both these tips will create shape amongst the flowy folds of the cape. Check out our accessories for lots of options.

    accessories_resized

However you style it, the cape will be on trend, making you feel super glam. Check out all these items and more today at Mombasa Rose.

In terms of style icons, who do you think you most try to emulate within your own style?

I have no style icon! I go with what speaks to me and what catches my eye.

Fave trend for the winter season and what do you think we’ll be seeing lots of this spring?

Oversized knit sweaters paired with black leggings and casual boots will always be my favourite winter trend! So comfy, casual and cute! I think capris will come back into style this spring.

What has been your biggest fashion faux pas to date?

Heels with socks. Almost as bad as socks with sandals! It ended up being a huge trend this summer but it's a huge no for me.

If you could attend any fashion show in the world, what would it be?

Victorias Secret Winter Fashion Show. It's great motivation to get fit! Lol

  • The perfect summer wardrobe

There's no denying it's been warming up in the past couple of weeks and judging by the number of bare legs that we've seen getting about, girls everywhere are looking forward to a change of wardrobe. Finally, it's time to start investing in some of the summer looks that came out of the US and UK in the last few months! So put all your jumpers, jackets and scarves back under the bed and turn your attention to these key items. If you've got one of each, you'll never be faced with the misery of a “nothing to wear” moment.

flatlay_resized1. The playsuit. Cool, casual, no styling necessary. Beach, bar, bumming around. Suits all occasions. Try our Pineapple Sundae playsuit.

    2. A basic white shirt, like our Lollie White Tunic. An essential on any seasonal wardrobe list, but make sure your summer top is breezy and shows off some shoulder.

    3. A cropped top. Because, well, your tanned tummy needs some screen time. For ultimate tan-top contrast, try a black crop like the Luna Moss Black top.

    4. Denim shorts. Do we even need to explain this?

    5. Cute, non-denim shorts. For when the old faithful denim is dirty, or you need to dress it up a little bit. The Georgie Green shorts fit the bill.

    6. Maxi skirt. For when you need to dress it up a little bit more. We recommend a print like the Miriam Orange maxi. Match this one to both your tops, and you've already got six outfit combos.

    7. Beach dress. This is the MOST ESSENTIAL ITEM. Wear it morning, noon and night. Can be worn over bikinis, or with number 10 for instant resort chic. Find one that you love. We love our 2 Rope Dress

    8. A party dress. This item is actually optional, but definitely comes in handy for long summer nights. Pictured above is the Heart Trapeze dress.

    9. A pair of sunnies. Although many of us think of these as a fashion item, they're also important for your health. And there's no doubt that last summer's faves have been sat on or smashed, so new frames are definitely in order. Mombasa Rose have lots on offer. We particularly love the Arrow Ray Rose specs.

    10. Heeled sandals. These go with all the above outfits and you have our express permission to go barefoot most of the time anyway.

Numbers 1-9 and more are available at Mombasa Rose, so get shopping to avoid wardrobe frustration, because it's only going to get hotter!

  • Shoulder show-off

It's safe to say that there are some trends that we all hope will never come back in style. Off the shoulder is definitely not one of them.

The look is basically a strapless top, but unlike a “boob tube”, these tops have sleeves. This makes for a super casual, effortlessly put together look, especially when paired with denim. You can easily dress your off the shoulder top up, though, by matching it with a tailored skirt, a la Katy Perry. So one item can take you shopping, to a festival, to the beach or even to a garden party. And the best part about off the shoulder and all these outdoor activities? No tan lines. You'll want to wear these babies all through spring and summer.

Show one shoulder or both, dress it up or down, push your sleeves up for even more skin or wear it cropped to bare it all. Wear the trend in prints and textures, sheer or all covered up. Try off the shoulder with spaghetti straps like Alessandra Ambrosio for when you're too busy to worry about possible wardrobe malfunctions. Belt it to play with your silhouette or leave it free flowing to catch the wind.

Bloggers and celebrities alike are slipping into something a little more comfortable with their off the shoulder looks.

    trend

We love this flirty trend here at Mombasa Rose and have loads of ways that you can channel it.

Go casual in our Lollie pink or white tunics, or black Dippie Hippie top.

    casualtops

Add some more interest to your outfit with prints and textures. Try our Darling Frill top in white or our Hibiscus top.

    moreinterest

If you aren't ready to fully commit to the trend, try something with both straps and off the shoulder sleeves. Our Canape top in white, Molly tunic in blue or Pineapple Sundae playsuit all fit the bill.

    withstraps

And if there's a special occasion coming up, check out our cocktail styles, including the Ekka dress and Miss Taken dress.

    cocktail

For jewellery, take a leaf out of actress, Elle Fanning and style guru, Miroslava Duma's books and try chokers and statement necklaces. This will draw even more eyes to your collarbones and sun kissed shoulders.

    jewellery

For even more eye catching glitz on your decolletage or back, apply some of our foil tattoos, giving just a peek of gold or silver from under your top.

Shop online now to get your off the shoulder top and start styling! However you wear it, off the shoulder is a trend we think you'll be hoping sticks around for a long while yet.

    jumpsuit

Designers, bloggers and stylists all agree that maxi length items are wardrobe staples, simply because they can be worn in any season, on any occasion and flatter every body type.

Floor length evening formal? Of course! Just make sure you glam up with accessories!

Floor length daytime shopping? Easy, with simple sandals and a cross body bag.

    Floor length in winter? Duh!

Floor length in summer? A breezy fit is perfect!

Floor length on shorties? Just go high waisted and BAM . . . Long legs!

Floor length on tall girls? Feet are covered, no heels required.

Now comes the fun part . . . how to style your maxi!

The most important point to remember when you're planning your maxi outfit is:

    Break. It. Up.

You don't want to look like you're wearing curtains, so it's essential to divide your outfit into your ideal proportions by playing with shape and contrasting colours. You can do this easily with a belt, a flash of skin below your season favourite cropped top, a top with fringing or lace detail at the hem or even a basic cardi or jacket. If your maxi is patterned, it may be all the statement you need, but a simple coloured maxi-skirt will be screaming out for a “look at me” top and big jewellery. Take a cue from these fashionistas and try thick or thin belts, dramatic necklaces and all manner of sleeves.

Whatever your look, there's a maxi to suit it, so check out all the looks online and in store, today.

  • Katie Eve - Style Maven

Native San Franciscan Katie Eve is proving that Brisbane is definitely where all the cool kids are flocking. Her self titled blog (see www.katie-eve.blogspot.com.au) is filled with gorgeous photos of her electric and ever-changing styles featuring snippets of Brisbane surrounds.  We sat down with Katie to talk about style, which she says is has always been her second language.

What would you say to other girls who would like to start blogging?

I would say that they should really think about their goal for being a blogger and their story. With blogging becoming more and more popular by the day, especially fashion bloggers, its hard to stand out when so many girls are doing the exact same thing. The next thing to do would be to invest in Adobe creative cloud and an amazing camera. Those two items are my life now.

How did you hear about Mombasa Rose?

I actually heard about Mombasa Rose on Instagram. Instagram is where I find all my favourite new brands.

Katie mixing up our plaid playsuit with a combination of prints Katie mixing up our plaid playsuit with a combination of prints

Describe your style in 3 words...

The first word is probably the most important, Ever-changing. I could be dressing like a flower child one day and then rocking sneakers and track pants the next, it really just depends on my mood and my setting. The next two words for the moment are:  2. Street 3. Edgy

What’s the one thing you could never live without?

My Isabel Marant sneakers. I have two pairs now and since its winter, I wear them almost everyday.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

San Francisco or New York. I am from San Francisco so its just home for me but I have always wanted to live in New York also.

In terms of style icons, who do you think you most try to emulate within your own style?

Shea Marie from Peace love Shea has always been someone I considered my style Icon. She is a bit edgy and tomboyish but knows how to rock a sexy dress or girly skirt. That has always been like my style so in a sense I emulate her. But I always try and be myself while also getting inspirations from Shea and many others.

Favourite trend for the winter season and what do you think we’ll be seeing lots of this spring?

One of my all time favourite trends for the winter season is the trench. Michael Lo Sordo did the most amazing pastel trench this year and I think the way he styled it in his runway show was unreal. Plus the pastel colour can translate from winter to spring. A trench is never going to go out style no matter how many seasons come and go. I think for this spring we will be seeing a lot of athletic clothing and matching two pieces!

Get sporty in our Kokomo Set Get sporty in our Kokomo Set

What has been your biggest fashion faux pas to date?

Well I originally thought it was wearing the Adidas slip on’s every day to school in grade 7. They kind of look like birkenstocks but had one thick strip across that was blue and white striped, but now that slip on’s are super trendy, Im thinking maybe that wasn’t such a fashion faux pas. I actually was ahead of curve at age 12.

If you could attend any fashion show in the world, what would it be?

Chanel or Valentino. I have so many favourite designers but I would pick these simply because of the grandeur of their shows.
