What is the History of Birthstones?

The history of birthstones can be traced back thousands of years. There are several explanations as to how birthstones came to correspond with specific birth months and many cultures have different opinions regarding this.

Astrological Birthstones

It is believed that the astrological birthstone list was Tibetan in origin. The Tibetans attributed mystical powers to each gemstone. For example, they believed that if you wore an amethyst, that regardless how much you drank, it would protect you from drunkenness. Thousands of years ago in India, the Ayurvedcic Indian Medicine list was created. Stones were given mystical and medicinal powers. Some were ground up and actually ingested while others were worn.

Modern Birthstones

As of 1912, the Jewelers of America Association formalized a modern birthstone list that is not only accepted in the United States but worldwide.

Unlike diamonds and emeralds, it is incredibly difficult to find large rubies, most of them being small flecks and stones. This is why it is much more valuable than other precious gemstones as its size increases. Only four gems fall into the precious gems category and those are the diamond, the emerald, the sapphire and the ruby.

The Ruby has always been a talisman of passion, protection and prosperity. It symbolises the sun, and its glowing colour suggests an inextinguishable flame within the stone that legends claim would shine through even the thickest clothing and could not be hidden; if Ruby were cast into water it would cause it to boil.

It was worn as an amulet or charm to ward off plague and pestilence, warned its wearer of impending danger, kept the body safe, and banished sadness and foolish thoughts. It was reputed to bring its owner peace, drive away frightful dreams, restrain lust, and to help resolve disputes.

Today, Ruby’s metaphysical properties are no less astounding.

It promotes a clear mind, increased concentration and motivation, and brings a sense of power to the wearer, a self-confidence and determination that overcomes timidity and propels one toward prosperity and achievement.

Ruby initiates the physical pleasures of life. It stirs the blood and stimulates the heart, encouraging one to enjoy being in the physical world. It increases desire and sexual energy and may be used to activate the kundalini.

Ruby has always been associated with love, especially faithful passionate commitment and closeness. In ancient times Rubies were considered to be a perfect wedding gift.
